IFA 2014: Nokia Lumia 830 and 730 hands-on

Nokia kicked off the event by announcing a software boost for all Windows Phones, including the Lumia Camera, before bringing out the tangible goods in the Nokia Lumia 830 and Lumia 730. Both are midrange smartphones, the 830 touted as “the first affordable flagship”. The Nokia Lumia 830 is the thinnest and lightest Lumia, says Nokia, including the thinnest Optical Image Stabilization module – it’s slim enough to allow overall depth of just 8.5mm. The camera itself boasts Zeiss optics and a 10MP sensor. The Lumia 730 slots in just below the 830 and puts a special spin on the front camera (the rear camera is interesting too). Nokia has developed a dedicated Lumia Selfie app that works best with the 5MP wide-angle camera on the face of the Lumia 730 but will also be available for all Lumias. The Lumia 730 is a 3G dual-SIM device but a Lumia […]

IFA 2014: Huawei Ascend Mate7 and G7 hands-on

Huawei introduced three new smartphones at the IFA 2014 fair – the Ascend Mate7, Ascend G7 and the Ascend P7 Sapphire Edition with a sapphire screen and ceramic back. The Huawei Ascend Mate7 is a pretty big device but is packed with all the rage of modern technology. On the front there’s a 6″ 1080p display, an octa-core processor, 13MP/5MP camera duo for back and front and comes with Huawei’s EMUI (Emotion UI) v3.0. The Huawei Ascend G7 is more of a midrange offering. It stacks up against the competition with a 5.5-incher of 720p resolution, a Cortex-A53 processor with four 1.2GHz cores and a 13MP/5MP combo of cameras. It will cost €299 when it makes it to retail stores. Huawei Ascend G7 After the break you’ll find our hands-on with both devices including a lot of pictures.

IFA 2014: LG G3 Stylus, Bello, Fino and G Watch R hands-on

LG couldn’t wait for the IFA expo to kick off and announced its upcoming devices weeks in advance. The affordable LG Bello and Fino, plus the LG G3 Stylus were made official in August, while the circular G Watch R smartwatch caught the spotlight a few days before the scheduled press events. We knew the newcomers specs, but the real life look and performance called for a visit of the LG’s booth at IFA in Berlin, where we were lucky to spend some quality time with all those cool gadgets. First we tried the LG G3 Stylus, a different take on the G3 flagship with trimmed-down screen and chipset, but with a metal chassis and a stylus, as the name suggests. Is it as good as the Samsung’s S-Pen? We’ll see. Next, we skipped straight to the amazing G Watch R. Just when we thought Motorola had it all figured […]

Motorola Moto X, Moto G and Moto 360 hands-on

Motorola isn’t on IFA this year but that didn’t stop the future Lenovo subsidiary from announcing its long-awaited Moto X and Moto G second generation smartphones and the rounded Moto 360 smartwatch running Android Wear. We were live at the event and are here to share our impressions with the three new devices by Motorola. Before we got to see the new Moto X and Moto G and play around with the Moto 360 we were taken on a tour of Motorola’s building and headquarters in Chicago, housed in the upper floors of the Merchandise Mart building that’s been there since 1931. After the impressive tour we were finally acquainted with the new devices, which have been making the rumor rounds and making tech whispers for months now. It’s no surprise – the Moto G is one of the most popular smartphones in tech due to its great hardware package, […]

Xiaomi Mi 3 vs Xiaomi Mi 4: Winners and sinners

Introduction The Xiaomi Mi 3, one of the most popular smartphones in China, is up against its own successor, the Mi 4. Two generations ready to clash: boxes opened, benchmarks loaded, audio on, cameras rolling, batteries charged. The Xiaomi Mi 4 has more RAM and a third-gen Snapdragon 801 chipset, along with LTE connectivity – all that in a slimmer, more compact shell. The upgraded specs go with an entirely new look with a handful of exchangeable rear covers to choose from. Xiaomi Mi 4 official pictures The Mi 3 on the other hand is powered by the previous version of that same chipset and is still a perfectly good package for the price. The big things missing are 4G data and 4K videos – both easily rendered irrelevant if a) there’s no LTE network where you live or b) you go for the 16GB version. With things like Gorilla […]

LG G3 vs. Sony Xperia Z2: Distance to impact

Introduction The premium droids are in combat mode and we are making ourselves comfortable to watch another pair fight it out for a place at the top. We’ve seen a few already, the newcomer LG G3 itself involved in a couple. The Xperia Z2 has a few under its belt as well, so these two should get straight at it, no time wasted on probing. LG and Sony have been as good as subscribed to the Android top four but one thing they cannot afford is complacency. Thankfully, their latest flagships are showing none of it. What makes this shootout so special though is the months that stand between them. We’re looking at this season’s first and probably last Android flagship announced – phablets excluded. LG took their time to complete a massive upgrade over the G2, the undisputed highlight of which is the QHD screen. And they didn’t stop […]

Samsung Galaxy K zoom review: Zoom-zoom

Introduction The Galaxy K zoom speeds down right onto our review track, ready to take on any cameraphone contender. This speedster is equipped with a 10x optical zoom and OIS and if you were to see only its back, you would hardly recognize you are staring at an Android smartphone with a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED screen on the other side. Samsung Galaxy K zoom official images The original Galaxy Camera didn’t have phone functionality and was way too big for comfort. The Galaxy S4 zoom’s specs were too low-end to deserve the “Galaxy S” badge. The Galaxy K zoom is reasonably sized (about as big as a Galaxy S4, except thicker and heavier) and offers solid midrange specs. Key features 20.7MP camera – 1/2.3″ sensor, 10x optical zoom (24-240mm), optical image stabilization, xenon flash 1080p video camera, 30fps and 60fps modes 2MP / 1080p front-facing camera 4.8″ Super AMOLED, 720 […]

Gionee Elife S5.5 review: Genie in a bottle

Introduction Phones like the Gionee Elife S5.5 have come a long way. Well, they’re coming from China but this is not stating the obvious as a figure of speech. We’ve seen good-looking phones made in China that are not the iPhone. We’ve seen reasonably-powered too. We’ve seen imitation evolve into real innovation. So, Gionee is trying to do what Huawei, Oppo and Xiaomi have been good at for a while. That’s quite an example to follow but how do you stand out from this kind of crowd? Even relative newcomers Gionee know all they need is an eye-catcher. Gionee Elife S5.5 official pictures Touted as the slimmest smartphone in the world, the Gionee Elife S5.5 is seriously good-looking too. Two Gorilla Glass 3 layers either side of a magnesium alloy frame is a combo we’d opt for in a heartbeat. The gorgeous super slim shell packs a beautiful 5″ 1080p […]
